Golf Breaks in Dumfries and Galloway
Sometimes regarded as the poor relation, in golfing terms, to its near neighbour Ayrshire and its world renowned golfing coastline, Scotland’s south western corner should nonetheless be given careful consideration as a destination for your next golf break.
With over 200 miles of dramatic coastline and rolling countryside there are many advantages to playing golf in Dumfries and Galloway including the warming flow of the Gulf Stream which provides the area with a mild climate, allowing golf to be played on all but a few days of the year.
Portpatrick, the Jewel in the crown of Dumfries and Galloway holiday villages, has a picturesque harbour and an excellent selection of bars and places to eat making it a great base from which to enjoy a golf break.
Courses in the area include the beautifully presented Portpatrick Dunskey which sits in a spectacular location above the village, the classic James Braid designed championship course at Stranraer and Wigtownshire County, a true links course sitting on the shores of Luce Bay.
Dumfries, a bustling market town, steeped in history, situated on the banks of the river Nith and by far the largest town in Dumfries and Galloway gives the visiting golfer plenty of choice whether it be the range and quality of the golf courses in and around the town or the large number of bars and restaurants to visit and enjoy in the evening. Courses to play include the wonderful Southerness, a championship links course on the Solway Firth, Powfoot which is set in breathtaking scenery and offers a mix of both links and parkland golf of the highest standard and Dumfries and County, situated on the outskirts of the town and a must play for golfing visitors to the area.
